The clearer you are about who you are, how you can add value to someone, and how to make that easy for them to choose you, the more likely someone is going to say yes to the Future You.
It’s that simple.
The additional benefit to this type of thinking is that when someone does say, “Yes, let’s do something together.” they’re choosing you just the way you are.
Man or women, I don’t think it matters. We ALL want our own “Mark Darcy moment,” where someone says, “I like you, just the way you are.” And I’m not just…
I’ve been ranting for a while that resumes no longer serve either the candidate or the hiring manager. My current narrative is that,
“A resume is about as useful as a nutrition label on a can of beans.”
Really, for something that the average hiring manager spends eight seconds reading, and that’s if it makes it to the manager’s desk, are they worth the effort? The consensus tells me no. You all then turn to me and ask, “So if not a resume, then what?” The short answer? I don’t know yet. But I’m on a bit of a mission…
I have a question. Which is more important to you when it comes to your job?
Before you tell me both immediately, I want to unpack what I think growth and accomplishment mean.
We grow in our roles when we’re learning new things, stretching our minds, and dancing on the edge of our current capabilities. We grow when we have room to fail and adjust when we garner insights we haven’t had before. Growth is change.
We feel accomplished in our roles when…
“Anything’s possible in the current moment.”
The speaker, a guest on a podcast, made this statement with such sadness that it stopped me in my tracks. It’s like she had given up. Hope, in her voice, was gone.
Is she right that things are just weird-as-all-get-out right now? Yes. Would any of us be surprised if aliens did land from Mars tomorrow? No.
As I said the other week, the future is unwritten, and no one can predict this new world we’re entering. There is so much we can’t control. But what we can all control is how we’re looking…
If you haven’t heard of Dreamforce, it’s Salesforce’s annual customer and partner event. Last year it had over 171,000 registered attendees with over 2700 sessions. It’s quite the event. It is also where I first discovered that serendipity is one of the biggest reasons to attend. It is, I think, the #1 reason to attend any conference. I learned that lesson early in my career. My first Dreamforce was in 2003, Salesforce’s first Dreamforce, funnily enough. They had a little over 1000 registered attendees, so maybe not the 171K of 2019, but it was still quite the event. Lunch was…
In 2010 I was invited to be part of an experiment. An experiment that brought a small group of brilliant women tech executives together to explore and act on the idea that we needed a unique professional platform to make it to the next level. The experiment was life-changing and has gone on to manifest into an annual program full of insights and surprises.
One of the biggest surprises was the realization that while people surrounded me, I was incredibly lonely. Like many women in executive roles, while I had friends, I didn’t have friends who also understood the kind…
I remember when one of my team gave me the zoom tip of “Hide self-view” in Zoom. I think I cheered. I want to see all of you; I don’t want to see myself. I’m not the only one; looking at yourself can stress you out. Zoom fatigue is a thing. And yet, every week, I ask the attendees of Live! With Joanna to turn on their cameras. Why? Mostly because the show has a ton of interactive moments. I’m asking questions, looking for volunteers, and engaging with the audience. Asking for people to raise their hands means I can…
I received an email the other day from a follower with the question:
“I’m considering hiring an executive coach, and I have no idea where to start. Do you have any advice, and is this something you do?”
As I answered the question, it occurred to me that she wasn’t the first person to ask me this question. First — on how one gets started hiring a coach, and second — what is it I exactly do when I work one on one with people. I thought it might be useful to share the answers with everyone.
The most common…
